Microblaze Quickstart (Obsolete)

This guide provides quick instructions on how to setup the

EVAL-AD-FMCOMMS2 on:

Using Linux as software

Required software

  • Bitfile and Linux ELF image

  • Xilinx XSCT/XSDB console (or legacy XMD) for programming

  • A UART terminal (Tera Term/Putty/Minicom), baud rate 115200 (8N1)

Required hardware

  • KC705 or VC707 FPGA board

  • AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ or AD-FMCOMMS3-EBZ FMC board

  • Micro / Mini-USB cable

Testing

Creating the setup

All the products described on this page include ESD (electrostatic discharge) sensitive devices. Electrostatic charges as high as 4000V readily accumulate on the human body or test equipment and can discharge without detection. Although the boards feature ESD protection circuitry, permanent damage may occur on devices subjected to high-energy electrostatic discharges. Therefore, proper ESD precautions are recommended to avoid performance degradation or loss of functionality. This includes removing static charge on external equipment, cables, or antennas before connecting to the device.

  1. Connect the AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ FMC board to the FPGA carrier (KC705: LPC FMC, VC707: FMC1 HPC connector)

  2. Connect USB JTAG (Micro USB) to your host PC

  3. Turn on the power switch on the FPGA board

  4. Open XMD/XSCT/XSDB console to configure the FPGA and download the ELF image

Loading

There are several ways to load the design onto the FPGA.

Method 1: Using XMD command line (legacy)

Dave@HAL9000:~$ xmd

If your FPGA carrier board (KC705, VC707) features a LCD display and the board is connected to a DHCP enabled network, the IP address may be printed on the display. This feature might not work with the latest releases. If the IP address is not shown on the display, it can be obtained via the UART console by running ifconfig. This allows you to connect remotely to the board as well (SSH, libiio remote).
