User guide

This page covers hardware configuration of the EVAL-AD3552RFMCxZ evaluation boards and the software environments available for evaluation.

Hardware configuration

VADJ and SD boot settings (ZedBoard)

Before inserting the evaluation board, configure the ZedBoard for SD card boot and set the VADJ supply to 1.8 V.

Important

The EVAL-AD3552R uses 1.8 V logic levels on the FMC connector. VADJ must be set to 1.8 V before powering on. Applying a different voltage may damage the evaluation board.

Set the boot mode jumpers on the ZedBoard to SD card boot (MIO[2:6] = 1) and configure the VADJ selection jumper for 1.8 V output.

ZedBoard SD boot jumper settings

Figure 1 ZedBoard SD boot jumper settings.

Power supply

The EVAL-AD3552R includes a complete on-board power conversion solution. Two DC/DC converters (LT8336, LTC7149) generate ±16 V from the 12 V supplied through the FMC connector. LDOs (LT3045, LT3094) then regulate ±12 V for the transimpedance amplifiers, while ADM7170 and LT3045 supply the AD3552R analog (5 V) and digital (1.8 V) rails.

Software guide

Two software environments are available: Linux-based IIO (using Kuiper Linux on the ZedBoard) and No-OS (bare-metal IIOD server over UART).

Linux IIO environment

The ZedBoard runs ADI Kuiper Linux with the adi-axi-dac kernel driver and the axi-ad3552r Linux IIO driver.

Available client applications on the host:

  • IIO Oscilloscope - graphical IIO data visualization and DAC control

  • Scopy - oscilloscope and waveform generator

  • PyADI-IIO - Python scripting interface

Note

If the output waveform appears clipped or inverted, check the data format setting. The AXI IP core defaults to offset-binary (unsigned) 16-bit samples. To switch to two’s complement, write register CNTRL_2 (offset 0x48 from the AXI base address):

busybox devmem 0x44A70048 32 0x4030

Bit [4] of CNTRL_2 selects the data format: 0 = two’s complement, 1 = offset binary.

No-OS environment

A No-OS example (ad3552r_fmcz) runs on the Zynq PS ARM core and provides an IIOD server over the UART interface.

Important

When running the No-OS IIOD firmware, the serial terminal used to view the boot log must be disconnected before connecting the IIO client. Configure the IIO client serial backend as follows:

  • Baud rate: 115200

  • Data size: 8 bits

  • Parity: none

  • Stop bits: 1

  • Flow control: none

Build the No-OS project from source:

cd no-OS/projects/ad3552r_fmcz
make

Expect the following output in the serial terminal:

Hey, welcome to ad3552r_fmcz AXI example
tx_clkgen: MMCM-PLL locked (133000000 Hz)
ad3552r_core: Successfully initialized (133332824 Hz)
Running IIOD server...

If successful, you may connect an IIO client application by:
1. Disconnecting the serial terminal you use to view this message.
2. Connecting the IIO client application using the serial backend
   configured as shown:
      Baudrate: 115200
      Data size: 8 bits
      Parity: none
      Stop bits: 1
      Flow control: none

For full No-OS driver documentation see AD3552R No-OS driver.

AD3542R hardware differences

The EVAL-AD3542RFMCZ board is the 12-bit voltage-output variant. Most of the hardware is identical to the AD3552R board, but note these differences:

TIA supply switch (S1)

The AD3542R has a three-position switch (S1) that sets the power supply for the output amplifiers. Set it to match your desired output range before powering on.

Important

Do not change S1 while the board is powered up.

Table 1 S1 switch positions

S1 Position

Use for

Left (±5 V)

±5 V output range

Middle (10 V)

0 V to 10 V output range

Right (−2.5 V/7.5 V)

−2.5 V to 7.5 V output range

Output connectors (AD3542R only)

  • J-OUT0 - connects channel 0 to the VOUT0 SMB connector. Remove to measure directly on TP2.

  • J-OUT1 - same for channel 1 / VOUT1 / TP3.
