ARRADIO Terasic C5 SoCkit Quick Start Guide

https://media.githubusercontent.com/media/analogdevicesinc/documentation/main/docs/solutions/reference-designs/arradio/images/terasic_c5_sockit_arradio.jpg

This guide provides some quick instructions (still takes awhile to download, and set things up) on how to setup the ARRADIO board on Terasic C5 SoCkit

Supported carriers

The ARRADIO board is an HSMC (High Speed Mezzanine Card) board; that means it needs a carrier to plug into.

The ARRADIO board is designed specifically for the Terasic C5 SoCkit carrier, which features an Intel Cyclone V SoC FPGA.

Supported Environments

The supported OS and software environments are:

FPGA board

HDL

Linux software

Terasic C5 SoCkit

Yes

Yes

Note

The ARRADIO board does not have No-OS software support. All software development and evaluation is done through Linux.

Creating the Micro-SD Card

Required files

The root of ‘BOOT’ should contain the following files:

  • socfpga.dtb

  • zImage

  • u-boot.scr

  • soc_system.rbf

The root of preloader partition should contain the following file:

  • preloader_bootloader.img

Note

More information regarding the build process of the HDL boot image can be found here: Generating HDL boot image for Intel projects

Setting up the hardware (Terasic C5 SoCkit)

You will need to:

https://media.githubusercontent.com/media/analogdevicesinc/documentation/main/docs/solutions/reference-designs/arradio/images/terasic_c5_sockit.jpg
  1. Insert the Micro-SD Card into the Micro-SD Card Connector

  2. Connect the ARRADIO board to the FPGA carrier HSMC connector

  3. Plug your monitor device into the VGA Video Connector

  4. Plug your USB mouse/keyboard into the USB 2.0 OTG Port

  5. Plug the Power Supply into 12V Power Supply connector (DO NOT turn the device on)

  6. Set the jumpers according to the following table:

All the products described on this page include ESD (electrostatic discharge) sensitive devices. Electrostatic charges as high as 4000V readily accumulate on the human body or test equipment and can discharge without detection. Although the boards feature ESD protection circuitry, permanent damage may occur on devices subjected to high-energy electrostatic discharges. Therefore, proper ESD precautions are recommended to avoid performance degradation or loss of functionality. This includes removing static charge on external equipment, cables, or antennas before connecting to the device.

Booting the Micro-SD Card

Note

There’re two options to connect to the IIO-OScilloscope & Scopy, directly on the target or remotely from a PC via ethernet. Below examples showcase the remote connection method.

UART setup

A UART terminal (serial console) can be used to capture the output of the example application. The number of used UART port depends on the computer’s configuration. The following settings must be used in the UART terminal:

  • Baud Rate: 115200bps

  • Data: 8 bit

  • Parity: None

  • Stop bits: 1 bit

  • Flow Control: none

On Windows:

Exampele of terminal emulators on Windows:

  • TeraTerm

    • Setting up Tera Term:

      • Open Tera Term

      • Select Serial and your Port: (COMx)

      • Setup → Serial port…

  • PuTTy

On Linux:

Important

Even thought this is Linux, this is a persistent file systems. Care should be taken not to corrupt the file system – please shut down things, don’t just turn off the power switch. Depending on your monitor, the standard power off could be hiding. You can do this from the terminal as well with sudo shutdown -h now
